CAMDEN, N.J. - On a night when winds were gusting close to 50 mph, the Camden Riversharks bumped off the Lancaster Barnstormers 7- 2 at Campbell's Field.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Barnstormers (5-9).
Barnstormers starter Nick Maness (0-1) looked as if he would get through the first inning in good shape, but Garrett Guzman beat out an infield single near second base to ignite a two-out rally.
Guzman advanced to second on a wild pitch. Valentino Pascucci hit a dribbler up the third base line for an infield hit, and Guzman scored when Lloyd Turner's off-balance throw bounced past first baseman Brett Harper. links of london charms Jason Botts followed with an RBI double inside the third-base bag for a 2-0 lead.
Lancaster had an opportunity to strike in the top of the second. Lefty Josh Brey walked Brett Harper leading off the inning. After a strikeout of Joe Gaetti, Matt Watson and Vic Gutierrez also picked up bases on balls to fill the bases.
However, Brey (1-1) bounced back to fan Josh Johnson. Toshihisa Nishi followed with a fly ball into the teeth of the wind for an easy final out. Lancaster never got a runner beyond second base again until the ninth inning.
Bedat & Co WatchGuzman added a homer down the right field line in the third for a 3-0 lead, but Camden broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth against Eric Ackerman.
After Gaetti robbed Richie Robnett with a diving catch, Guzman and Pascucci picked up walks. Botts rapped into a 5-4 force play as Turner made a diving stop along the third-base line. Rene Rivera cracked a long double to the base of the left-field wall for a 5-0 lead. Mike Costanzo then slugged a two-run homer to right as the Riversharks broke the game open, 7-0.
Brey carried the shutout through seven, allowing four hits and three walks. Jeremy Lewis tossed a hitless eighth inning.
Lancaster finally got to right-hander Jon Ellis in the ninth. Gaetti picked up a walk, took second on defensive indifference and scored on a double to right by Jed Morris. Morris scored one out later on a single along the left field line by Johnson, but the comeback died there.
The two teams continue the series at 1:05 p.m. today. Josh Hall (1-1) will take the mound for Lancaster. Camden will counter with right-hander Travis Chick (0-1).
Tiffany Necklace Frank-GehryNotes: Matt Watson became the Barnstormers' first ejection of the season. He was tossed by plate umpire Andy Vincent for arguing a called third strike in the sixth inning. Prior to that, he had drawn a walk, extending his on-base streak to 12 games.
Morris, batting for Watson in the ninth, had Lancaster's first successful pinch-hitting appearance this season. His double ended a streak in which Lancaster had been 0-for-21 with runners in scoring position.
