THE South Devon College Tennis Academy's British champion Kendal Brown will bid for a third successive ladies singles title at this weekend's Devon Senior County Closed Championships at Torquay Lawn Tennis Club.
The three-day event gets underway on Saturday at Belgrave Road and with nine titles up for grabs, few would bet against the reigning champion completing her own personal hat-trick by late Monday afternoon.
In the last three years, through working with Teignmouth's Charlotte Wallace and honing her skills with fellow Academy players at Paignton, the 19-year-old is the highest rated lady in the draw.
Brown is the top player in a line-up that also boasts a top golfer with the welcome return to the County Closed of former Torbay Open champion Keeley Clarke. It is 21 years since this supremely talented all-rounder won her first title at the Torbay Open when she captured the 12 and under singles.
She is clearly enjoying her tennis and last week captured the Gordon Mellar mixed doubles title at Newton Abbot alongside Murray Angel. She will be a very welcome entry at Torquay.
Other players to keep an eye on are second seed Rachel Williams and Emily Plester who twelve months ago, gave former champion Nicola Trelease plenty to think about during their three-set match.
. WHILE one British champion, Kendal Brown, seeks to win a third Devon senior singles title, another British champion, Peter Willcox, is looking to win the men's singles for the very first time.
Fake Versace HandbagsNine-times a winner of the national deaf title which he currently holds, Willcox is seeded three this weekend behind reigning champion Bruce Wheatley and Torquay's David Palmer.
Like Kendal Brown, Wheatley also goes for three in a row but it is by no means certain that he will lift the trophy with former champion Dominic Stones (Plymouth) in the draw along with former Devon junior champion Steven Wood from Teignmouth.
A one-time hitting partner on the world-wide ATP Tour for Vince Spadea (USA), the tall, talented left-hander is in the same half of the draw as Willcox and Palmer.
Exeter's Stephen Knowles would also love to get his name on the trophy and the number four seed is among those serious contenders for the title.
Keeping an eye on all the players and watching their progress will be Devon men's captain Daniel Jones (Plymouth) and will certainly want to look out for South Devon College academy players Josh Rees and Adam Cooper.
Rees faces Paignton's Jack Pillar in the opening round with Cooper meeting Bruno Alvarez with the winner taking on either Oskar Wynne or Carl Rugman.
The ratings suggest that Josh Belsher's (Newton Abbot) clash with local rival Oliver Bynoth should be a close one but Torquay's Ben Plester will need to bridge a gap in the ratings if he is to get past Josh Brown who helped Tavistock to a first-ever Vernon Weaver inter-league title at the start of the season.
At last year's Championships Josh Brown teamed up with the unrelated Kendal Brown to win the mixed doubles.
. THE County Closed men's doubles has five class acts receiving a bye to the quarter-finals. Dave Palmer and Bruce Wheatley are seeded one ahead of former champions Stephen Knowles and Dominic Stones.
Justin Kraushar teams up with Peter Willcox and talented twosome Simon Huddart (Exeter) and Oskar Wynne (Exmouth) pair up as do Alex Fau
