I MIGHT be an Englishman but I was still shocked to see the way France self-destructed out here.

They were a disgrace to their nation and none more so than Nicolas Anelka. I'm not sure where the French equivalent of Coventry is but the Chelsea striker should be sent there - or into the Foreign Legion for a Replica watches spell.

Joking aside, Anelka should never pull on a French shirt again after his part in the rebellion against Raymond Domenech and his foul-mouthed rant against the coach.

I said in this column last week Domenech shouldn't have been in charge of France at this World Cup.

He struggled to get them through qualifying and there were problems between him and his players from the moment they arrived. I know from my three years at Marseilles that the French are as proud and fanatical about their football as we are.

But their players have disrespected the fans and the shirt, tarnished their image on the global stage and embarrassed the nation. That's unforgiveable.

Sadly, they let down everyone, including themselves. France had that golden generation when they became kings of the world. They have clearly failed to adjust to being a team in transition and now they are just a laughing stock.

But I have a hunch they won't be in the doldrums too long. Laurent Blanc, their former captain, is taking charge after leaving Bordeaux.
